Science in Real Time: New Research Blog of MODUL University Vienna
Thursday, 7 August 2008
Celebrating its first anniversary of being accredited as a private university by the Austrian Accreditation Council, MODUL University Vienna has established a new channel of communication between science and industry. The 22 interdisciplinary faculty members of MU Vienna will present their latest research findings via four dedicated research blogs. The aim is to establish and advance the knowledge transfer between research and industry practice in the areas of new media, public governance, tourism and sustainability.
More than 100 academic publications in the first year document the strong research focus of the MU Vienna faculty members, which ensures topical education and helps address real-world challenges with academic competence. Karl Wöber, President of MODUL University Vienna, explains the underlying motivation for creating the blogs: "Besides providing first-class education to students, MODUL University Vienna acknowledges the social responsibility it holds as a competence and knowledge center, and thus reinforces knowledge transfer. Our research addresses the current problems of businesses and non-profit organizations alike." The provision of public access to research findings by means of blogs allows for an information flow from academia to practice. "This will certainly be valued by students who are engaged with industry during their studies. Furthermore, potential students can use the new service to access our research results," Wöber adds.
The informal character of Weblogs (Blogs) eases and accelerates communication and knowledge transfer between academia and industry. From today on, the researchers of MU Vienna will continuously inform the public about their study results, describe major events, and outline trends from any of MU Vienna's four core competence and research areas:
- New Media Technology | www.modul.ac.at/nmt/blog
- Public Governance | www.modul.ac.at/pgm/blog
- Tourism | www.modul.ac.at/thm/blog
- Sustainability | www.modul.ac.at/sustainability/blog
The four core research areas also represent the industries that are the closest partners of the university. The academic environment at MU Vienna aims to closely collaborate and foster exchange of ideas between academia and practice through students, international cooperation and the active engagement with social discourse. In turn, practitioners benefit not only from industry-relevant studies, but also from graduates that are best-prepared for the complexities of tomorrow's business.
Situated on top of Vienna's Kahlenberg, MODUL University Vienna opened its doors in 2007. The private university offers a BBA and MBA in Tourism Management (in cooperation with the Executive Academy of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration). Starting in October 2008, the range of study programs will be expanded by an MBA in New Media Technology and Management (www.modul.ac.at/nmt/mba) and an MBA in Public Governance and Management (www.modul.ac.at/pgm/mba). All study programs are conducted in English by international experts from science and industry, which guarantees the highest standards of teaching in line with the educational mission statement of MU Vienna.
