Dr. Andreas Wittmer awarded the Certificate of Outstanding Teaching Performance

In the pursuit to recognize outstanding teaching performance, the Dean of the Undergraduate School, Dr. Florian Aubke awards a Certificate of Outstanding Teaching Performance to those lecturers who have been highly commended by the students through course evaluations.

“As a university, we strive for excellence in two areas, research and teaching. The former is recognized by the academic community, for example through citation factors of our published work.  In contrast, excellence in teaching is seldom publicly noted, which, in my eyes, does not do justice to the time and effort the faculty at MU invests in designing and delivering their courses” says Dr. Aubke.

The Certificate of Outstanding Teaching performance is one tool to put exemplary teaching performance in the spotlight, and I am appreciative of all students who actively contribute to this by evaluating each and every subject they take.

For the fall semester 2015/16, the Certificate of Outstanding Teaching Performance is awarded to Dr. Andreas Wittmer, for his course Aviation Management. Mr. Wittmer is an external lecturer from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland and students in his course particularly highlighted the practical relevance and the way the course content has been delivered in an engaging way.

Upon receiving the certificate, Mr. Wittmer stated: “I am particularly pleased and surprised about this recognition, as it represents recognition over and above the usual feedback we get from student evaluations.”

In regards to his teaching approach he said, “aviation management is a topic where almost everyone sees themselves as mini-experts, drawn from their experience as consumers. I attempt to include a scientific approach wherever I see fit and by making active links to current events. This triggers discussions in class and encourages students to relate those events to the impact on the wider aviation system.”

Congratulations Dr. Wittmer!
