Kristof Tomej joins the Department of Tourism and Service Management

Hailing from western Ukraine, Kristof Tomejis a Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of Tourism and Service Management and is pursuing his PhD in Business and Socioeconomic Sciences.

He told us a little about his academic background and what brought him to study tourism and his work and studies at MU.

‘’I just recently obtained my Master of Science degree from the European Master in Tourism Management programme – an Erasmus Mundus course taught be a consortium of three European universities – University of Southern Denmark (Denmark), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and University of Girona (Catalonia, Spain). Therefore, I have spent my last two years living in three different countries. Apart from studying, I also tried to get immersed into the local culture, particularly by learning Danish, Slovenian and Spanish during my studies. In general, learning languages is something that I have been enjoying doing since I was a child, and it opened many opportunities throughout my life.

I’m originally from the city of Uzhhorod in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, where I studied tourism at Uzhhorod National University first on a bachelor, then master level. I was actively involved in student government during my studies there, and served as the head of the university’s Student Council for one term, which involved not only administrative and representative duties, but also organization of events, meeting a lot of interesting people, and working on promoting a good image of the university. Apart from that I tried myself as a translator/interpreter, tour guide, and also, as a part-time student I obtained a bachelor’s degree in software engineering.

I decided to choose tourism for my career back when I was 16, when as an exchange student I travelled to the United States and back to my home country. The long journey has sparked my interest in the industry that stands behind all the millions of people travelling around the globe for leisure, business and many other purposes. I’ve been studying tourism for the last 7 years and I very much enjoy doing it.

I have conducted research on destination brands, rural tourism, music and sounds in tourism advertisements and sustainable transportation in tourism. Now, as a Researcher and Lecturer I am with the team of the Department of Tourism and Service Management of MODUL University, and I am very excited to share my knowledge and experience with the undergraduate students of MODUL and also to continue my research work together with my new colleagues.’’

Welcome Kristof!
