Multicultural start to the fall semester

This September, MU welcomed over 100 students from 33 countries. Since founding in 2007, our halls have been walked by students from 74 nationalities, and at any given time over 50 cultures are represented on campus. Such a range of diverse views and experiences is sure to add another element to classroom learning and campus social life. In the words of one newcomer, “MU is a great place to meet people from all over the world!”.

Our students are also culturally savvy, many with international upbringings. In addition to new faces from Thailand, Macedonia, and Pakistan, holders of Austrian passports grew up in Indonesia, Mexico and India. The nature of the study programs at MU draws students from the Alps to the Andes to the Appalachians to study for an international career in tourism management, public governance, sustainable development and more.

With only 6% of MU students coming from English-speaking countries, bilingualism is de rigueur on Kahlenberg, with many of our students conversant in upwards of 4 or 5 tongues. One new BBA student speaks her native Romanian and an additional 7 languages!

Intercultural communication is one of the core-courses in the BBA curriculum, and many of our students have lifelong experience in this field. One Modulian is of Japanese-Turkish origin and grew up in four countries, another is an Austrian-Filipina who called Canada home for many years, and our Bulgarian-Lebanese student is currently on an exchange semester from England. Some even have a wider panache of heritage such as Iranian-Austrian-Greek-Syrian, she's surely one of the few out there! Combined with our international staff and faculty, MU is a multicultural mosaic on the mountain.
