Landscape of the Year Network
by Karin Glaser — 11/11/2010The Danube Delta, the Lesachtal, the Lubusz country and the Slovak Karst – Aggtelek Karst have some things in common: They are European cross border regions with important natural heritages and each of them has been designated as ‘Landscape of the Year’ by the International Friends of Nature. Naturefriends International and MODUL University Vienna among others are partners in a project which aims at creating a network of these regions with a particular focus on tourism.
The Use and Valuation of Journals in Planning Scholarship: Peer Assessment versus Impact Factors
by Karin Glaser — 09/29/2010Harvey Goldstein, head of the Department of Public Governance and Management at MODUL University Vienna, and Gunther Maier from WU-Wien have published an article in the Journal of Planning Education and Research that examines whether the subjective value of journals by scholars in the field of planning is related to journal impact factors. Impact factors are based upon incidence of citations of the articles published in a given journal. Goldstein and Maier found that there is no statistical relationship, and urge university administrators to be cautious in using journal impact factors for making personnel decisions and for evaluating the scholarly productivity of academic departments.

MODUL University Vienna had the pleasure to host a presentation by Prof. Roger Mesznik, an expert in finance from the Graduate Business School of Columbia University, New York, who has more than twenty five years of experience in lecturing on corporate finance, financial markets and instruments and financial strategy and planning. Prof. Mesznik, who is also a consultant to corporations and multi-national and international institutions such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Trade and Economic Council, IBM, and the World Bank, has shared his insight into the current financial crisis with an audience of about eighty students, scholars, politicians and businessmen and women.

Professor Harvey Goldstein possesses a long and successful academic career in the U.S. in the area of Public Governance. We are privileged to have him at MODUL University Vienna. He previously worked at the Department of City and Regional Planning of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (USA). There, he taught and conducted research in the field of regional economic development which he will continue to do at MU Vienna.
