Living in Vienna
Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria. It is the country's
biggest city and seat of many international organizations (official UN
seat, OECD headquarters). Its roughly 1.7 million inhabitants live in a
space of 414 square kilometers.
According to ‘Mercer’s Quality of Living survey 2010’ which looks at many factors including safety, public services, and recreation, Vienna is ranked as THE BEST CITY in
the world! Indeed, Vienna has many reasons for having been given this
distinction. It has a well-developed public transport network. Vienna
is also the perfect base from which to explore Europe with trains
leaving for Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Eastern Europe on an hourly
basis.
Approximately 50% of Vienna (about 200 square kilometers) is made up
of green areas. A large part of these green areas is free for public
use. In summer, the Viennese take advantage of one of the city’s many
open air swimming pools, the 1,100 kilometers of cycle paths or relax
in the bars and restaurants on the 21 kilometer long Danube Island. In
winter, nothing beats the atmosphere of the Christmas markets or the
coffee houses which are found dotted around Vienna.
