Media Watch on Climate Change Presented at European and US Conferences [Video]
The Department of New Media Technology has recently presented its latest research results at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Geographical Information Processing and Visual Analytics for Environmental Security in Trento (Italy), the Annual Conference of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC-2008) in Philadelphia (US), as well as the Experience IT conference organized by Siemens IT Solutions and Services in Vienna (Austria). As part of these presentations, Prof. Arno Scharl demonstrated the Media Watch on Climate Change, a public Web portal that gathers environmental articles from online media, automatically builds a comprehensive knowledge base, and makes this knowledge base available through an interactive Web application.
The results of the NATO workshop, which aims at investigating the potential of geographically-related information to increase environmental security, will be published as NATO Science for Peace Security Series. This year's ASTC-2008 focuses on science centers’ place at the crossroads of the scientific community and the general public. Organized by David Herring from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the theme of the session at ASTC-2008 was "What Do We Know About What They Know About Climate Science?". In the same session, Robin-Marie Williams from Harmonic International outlined the potential of new media technology to guide public outreach programs and improve environmental awareness and collaboration, using the Media Watch on Climate Change as a concrete example.
