MU Vienna Exhibit at the 9th Int'l Conference on Knowledge Management and Knowledge Technologies
Hosted by the Austrian Center for Knowledge Management (www.know-center.at), the I-Know and I-Semantics 2009 conferences took place in Graz from September 2-4, providing a highly interactive setting for academics and industry experts alike. More than 450 participants attended the conference, with around 70 contributors of long and short papers, respectively. MODUL University Vienna presented recent research projects such as IDIOM (www.idiom.at) and RAVEN (www.modul.ac.at/nmt/raven), as well as the MBA in New Media Technology and Management (www.modul.ac.at/nmt/mba) being offered for the first time as of October 2009.
The initial keynote by Paolo Traverso, director of the "Center for Information Technology" of the FBK Fondazione Bruno Kessler outlined semantically enriched content services adapted to the spatial orientation of the user in the real world (“location-based services”). The keynote resonated well with a number of paper presentations during the conference investigating ways to turn Web content into a machine-readable format, with a strong focus on ontology development and refinement. Recurrent refinement based on evaluation results improves ontology creation and extension. This approach is capable of detecting potential flaws during the creation process and overcomes the need of a complete refactoring after a negative evaluation in the final phase. Such methods to capture the evolution of knowledge belong to the core research areas of MU Vienna’s Department of New Media Technology (www.modul.ac.at/nmt).
The social program of this year’s conference started with a welcome reception at the “Kunsthaus Graz” on the first day, including a guided tour to visit Graz’ important monuments. The gala dinner on the second day entertained with the EGON7 live band and traditional Styrian “Alphornbläsern”.
