Semantic Web Technologies

This course will arouse a critical understanding of Semantic Web technologies. A profound overview of Semantic Web technologies and concepts is presented, and the application of these ideas to various problems is demonstrated using real world use cases. Finally, the students are guided to select Semantic Web technologies for a real world problem and to assess the proposed solution's impact.
Content covered will be Semantic Web concepts, relation to information retrieval, Semantic Web technologies and their applications, use cases and the application of the technologies in projects.


Dr Marta Sabou is an Assistant Professor at the Department of New Media Technology as of May 2010. Before joining MODUL University Vienna, she was a Research Fellow at the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University, UK. She holds a Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence from the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. In 2005 she completed her PhD at the Knowledge Representation Group of the Vrije Universiteit on the topic of enhancing and (semi)automatically learning ontologies used to specify the semantic description of Web services.
