Christian Kerschner
Short Bio
Assistant Professor at Modul University Vienna, School of Sustainability, Governance and Methods;
Christian Kerschner studied Business and Economics at the University Vienna and holds a masters and a PhD in Ecological Economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, ICTA). He has worked and studied at several different European Universities (Reading, London, Leeds, Groningen and Berlin) and is an engaged member of the Ecological Economic and Degrowth scientific community; participating in and co-organising conferences, events and initiatives in Vienna and Barcelona. His publications in the field of alternative economic approaches (Degrowth, Steady State Economy) and the Energy Transition (Peak-Oil, Post-Carbon Society, Input-Output modelling of Resource limitations) are widely cited (over 2300 citations according to Google Scholar). These include the editorial lead in a special issue on Degrowth and Technology (23 contributors) and a seminal paper on the link between Degrowth and the Steady State economy and an assessment of the potential vulnerabilities of our economies when faced with the limitations of key resources.
Moreover, Christian is experienced in procuring and conducting third party funded research projects and has served (is serving) as the PI in two large EU projects: MEDEAS and i-CONN. His outreach activities include regular public and invited talks at conference or workshops and selected appearances in international public media (e.g. Ö1 Dimensionen, Der Standard, The Guardian,..). In his private life Christian enjoys skiing, climbing, playing with his kids outside (building things with reclaimed materials), working in the family forest and orchard and gardening.
