The MODUL University Vienna Merit Scholarships are granted to currently enrolled students in all programs on the basis of academic excellence and extracurricular involvement. According to Austrian StudFG, there are two types of Merit Scholarships: Leistungsstipendium and Förderstipendium, whereby the Förderstipendium is foreseen for financing expenses that may arise for finishing a thesis that is expected to be of excellent quality. These expenses particularly include those for: accommodation, travel, conference/workshop participation, literature, and printing.
Applications for the Merit Scholarships can be submitted within the application period from December 1st until December 15th.
The Merit Scholarship Committee (MSC), consisting of two faculty members and one student, evaluates applications and proposes grant recipients to the Term Conference for a final decision. Currently, the chair of the MSC is Ulrich Gunter.
Eligibility- who can apply?
To be considered, students must fulfill criteria in three areas. Students are eligible if
- For BBA and BSc applicants, they have completed a minimum of 60 ECTS (spring intake students: 54 ECTS) during the previous academic year,
- For MSc and PhD applicants, they have completed all required courses in their curriculum that were offered by the University during the previous academic year,
- For MBA applicants, they have completed 69 ECTS (part-time students: 34 ECTS) (including transfer credits) during the previous academic year.
if they have a weighted average grade of 90% or higher based on the grades of their mandatory courses taken at MODUL University (excluding internships) during the previous two semesters. *
if they prove that they have taken part in extracurricular or community activities during their studies at MU, such as additional work experience, committee work, serving as a student representative, community/volunteer involvement, participation in on-campus and off-campus university activities and or other such contributions.
The federal ministry restricts these merit scholarships to only those students holding an EU passport.
Amount and number of grants
The number of grants per stage and their amount will depend on the amount of money available per academic year. The available amount of money for each stage and academic year will be fixed together with the university budget for the forthcoming academic year and will be allocated to all awarded students depending on their individual performance.
How and when to apply
For a Leistungsstipendium, applicants must submit:
A motivation letter indicating why the applicant merits consideration,Confirmation documents regarding additional activities and social engagements (recommendation letters, confirmation letters, etc.), transcript of grades.
For a Förderstipendium, applicants must submit in addition:
· An abstract of their thesis including a budget plan proposal (students must later present evidence that their actual expenditures were consistent with their proposal) and a proposed time schedule,
· A recommendation letter of the student’s supervisor including a confirmation of the student’s budget plan proposal as well as a statement if the thesis is expected to be of excellent quality.
Applications (letter and supporting documents) are submitted to the Program Manager in the Academic Office, which forwards them to the Merit Scholarship Committee (MSC). Students must apply by December 15th. The award will be granted before March 31st. Decisions by the MSC are published in the showcase next to the Academic Office.
* Please note: For courses with group assessments, students may request that the grades for one of these courses per semester be excluded from the average grade for the scholarship period (previous academic year). This can be requested for a maximum of 1 course per semester for each scholarship period.
Students who have been named to the Dean’s List twice during their MU undergraduate career will receive a scholarship for MU’s MSc program and only pay €6,000 tuition for the entire program. (*The alumni grant or other MU scholarships cannot be used in conjunction with the Dean’s List MSc Scholarship.)
Dean's List award requirements:
Students must earn a minimum of 24 ECTS or more during a semester at MODUL University. Students need a GPA of 90% or above and cannot have earned a final grade below 80% in the respective semester. Only courses at MODUL University qualify in the GPA calculation. Only first attempts will be counted (if a student fails a course the first time and then retakes it, it will not be taken into account).
This scholarship is awarded to students who submit proposals aimed at making a positive sustainability impact.
Two types of proposals are considered: Research Proposals and Project Proposals.
All current undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students from all study programs at MODUL University may apply for funding to assist them in covering their research costs. Such expenses may include costs related to data collection, travel to conferences, publishing, etc., and could arise in relation to a thesis work or other research project. The main criterion against which submissions are evaluated is their contribution to fostering sustainability. As such, submissions should outline the nature of the research – including the research question – and should highlight the foreseen social, environmental and economic impacts of the research in concrete terms; it is advantageous to discuss how and where the research findings will be implemented and/or communicated in order to achieve these impacts.
Submissions should explicitly state the amount of money requested, specify the purpose(s) for which it would be used, and provide a timeline for the research project. Justification should be provided as to why this methodological approach is superior to other/cheaper alternatives. Efforts to co-finance the research through other sources are appreciated.
Applications can be submitted at any time, yet the committee will take decisions on two dates each year: April 15th and October 15th.
Each submission received will be judged on its merits by the Merit Scholarship Committee in consultation with the MU Sustainability Committee, and may be awarded an amount of up to €1,000. Proposals should be between 1,500 and 4,000 words in length and of a high academic standard. Recipients are required to present their research project to faculty, staff and invited students, and must later present evidence that their actual expenditures were consistent with their proposal.
Submissions should be sent to Ulrich Gunter (email@example.com).
The whole MU community – all current students, staff, faculty and alumni – are eligible to submit a proposal for an innovative project that could be implemented at MU in order to advance the ongoing goal of becoming a more sustainable university.
1) The idea must relate to the concept of sustainability. Submissions should first identify an existing problem, then describe the project and explicitly state the social, environmental and economic impacts of the project.
2) It must be legally and financially feasible to implement the idea at MU. Submissions should include detailed guidelines for implementation of the project, including costings where appropriate, and applicants should contact those people relevant to implementation of the project in order to assess its feasibility.
3) The format for submission is open and creativity is encouraged. Written proposals should be between 1,500 and 4,000 words in length and of a high academic standard, video submissions should not exceed 10mins, and alternative formats should be of a comparable length.
4) Once announced, winner(s) are required to present their idea to faculty, staff and invited students.
Applications can be submitted at any time, yet the committee will take decisions on two dates each year: April 15th and October 15th.
Each submission received will be judged according to the quality of the application, creativity/innovativeness, degree of feasibility, and sustainable impact by the Merit Scholarship Committee, in consultation with the MU Sustainability Committee, and awarded an amount of up to €1,000. Submissions should be sent to Ulrich Gunter (firstname.lastname@example.org). At the discretion of the awarding committee, in consultation with the MU Sustainability Committee, additional funds may be made available from the Scholarship of Hope fund for the implementation of projects which are deemed to be of significant value to the university and which are unable to gain funding from other sources.
