Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber awarded as Honorary Senator of MODUL University Vienna

MODUL University Vienna has honored its founding sponsor and scholarship donor Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber, in a ceremony this Friday at the campus on Kahlenberg. Sheikh Al Jaber was given the title ‘Honorary Senator’ for his contributions to the promotion of scientific and cultural functions of the University, making him the first external recipient of this rare distinction. Distinguished guests including Sir Tim Lankester, the former President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and current Director of the School of Oriental Studies, London University, and Mrs. KR Brigitte Jank, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, attended the academic ceremony where MODUL University President Prof. Dr. Karl Wöber bestowed the title on Sheikh Al Jaber.

Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber has contributed substantially to the successful development of MODUL University Vienna, and founded the MBI Al Jaber Foundation which awarded numerous scholarships which allowed students from the Middle East to study at prestigious universities. He was also involved in the founding and development of the Tourism Industry Advisory Board of MODUL University Vienna.

Prior to his engagement with MODUL University, Sheikh Al Jaber has supported several other universities in the UK. During this time he initiated many scholarship programmes and educational projects but has also recently signed an agreement with UNESCO to support education in Yemen, working closely alongside the Ministries of Education, Technical and Vocational Education and Higher Education and Research to improve, strengthen and reform both the education system and its service delivery. Al Jaber, who has already received honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster and the London City University, is a recognized spokesperson for peace and democracy in the Middle East, as well as a UNESCO Ambassador for education, human rights, tolerance and culture.

"With the awarding of Honorary Senator, MODUL University Vienna expresses its gratitude for a good friend and benefactor of the university, and at the same time binds an important, competent, and socially committed supporter of young people from the Middle East to our university," said Prof. Wöber.

Prof. Wöber gave the laudatory speech together with Quassem Ali, MBA, an MBI Al Jaber Foundation scholarship recipient, and graduate of MODUL University Vienna.
