Short Bio
Prof. Dr. Markus Scholz holds the Endowed Chair of Corporate Governance & Business Ethics at the University of Applied Sciences for Management & Communication Vienna.
At the University of Applied Sciences for Management & Communication Vienna Dr. Scholz is Head of the Center for Corporate Governance & Business Ethics and Head of the Center for Strategy and Competitiveness.
Among various other national and international research and teaching positions, he is a visiting scholar at the INSEAD Social Innovation Centre, a research associate at the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and the Social Sciences at the London School of Economics and ambassador to the Giving Voice To Values Initiative.
Previous academic positions include the Wharton Business School where he served as Senior Fellow at the Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research (2013-2017) as well as a position as Visiting Professor at the Center for Ethics and Law in the Life Sciences at the Leibniz University of Hannover (2015). He also serves as a member of the editorial board of the Philosophy of Management Journal.
Dr. Scholz’s research, teaching and consulting expertise includes
- Collective Action (primarily industry self-regulation and anti-corruption),
- Corporate Governance & Risk Management (in particular in the banking and pharmaceutical industries),
- Strategic Sustainability & Corporate Social Responsibility,
- Purpose and Ethical Leadership (e.g. Giving Voice To Values)
- Business & Human Rights issues (including normative management frameworks).
His research has been published in leading philosophy and management journals, including California Management Review, The British Journal for Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of the Social Sciences and Organization Studies and is regularly cited in the national and international public media.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Scholz serves as an advisory council for various national and international for-profit firms as well as non-profit organizations. He consults in a range of public- and private-sector projects with a focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, he is engaged in top-executive training programs and regularly provides key notes to audiences in and outside of academia.
