New MU study on tourism bike rentals in Austria

MODUL University Vienna faculty, together with the with Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), were recently commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism (BMNT) to investigate the bike rentals systems in Austria.

The study was done in cooperation with regional destination management organizations who want to make better use of the potential of bike tourism in the future. To find out how the current systems are currently being used, the research team surveyed, analysed, located and evaluated the country’s most important national bike rental systems.

The most important success factors for tourist bike rentals were found to be personal on-site assistance, high-quality equipment, flexible adaptation to individual needs, an attractive cycling infrastructure, and signposted cycling routes.

Project head Dr. Lidija Lalicic was highly positive about the outcome and opportunities for further research. She says ‘’the project was a great opportunity for us to collaborate with AIT and investigate this highly relevant and practical topic in the tourism industry. We will continue to explore the future potential bike tourism has for Austria’’.
