Economics at Surrey - Dr. Ulrich Gunter visits MU partner University

Dr. Ulrich Gunter of the Department of Tourism and Service Management made a recent scholarly visit to one of our partner universities, the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. His first order of business was the "Conference on Banking, Finance, Money, and Institutions: The Post Crisis Era", which was jointly organized by the University of Surrey (Guildford, UK) and Fordham University (New York City, US) and took place at the University of Surrey.

Ulrich presented a paper entitled "Macroeconomic, industry- and bank-specific determinants of the net interest margin in Austria – evidence from dynamic panel estimation", a joint work with Gerald Krenn and Michael Sigmund from the Austrian National Bank (OeNB) at. The presentation was well received by an interested international audience who provided the authors with valuable comments.

Following the conference, he spent a week as a visiting researcher at Surrey’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, making use of the possibility to get to know and talk to numerous faculty members of MU’s partner institution.  In addition, he is MU’s liaison officer responsible for coordinating outgoing exchange students to Surrey, and thus got acquainted with their International Office to facilitate smooth student exchange.

He also delivered a talk in the research seminar of the School,  addressing the topic "Varying price and income elasticities in a global touristic context: measuring the influence of different growth periods and the seasons", from a joint work with Egon Smeral, MU Professor and Senior Expert at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research.

The talk was very well received by the seminar audience of faculty members and PhD students, and both Ulrich and MU look forward to further collaboration with our partners at the University of Surrey!
