First Prize at the Linked Data Cup

On September 7th, MODUL University Vienna has added a new award to its collection by winning the First Prize at the Linked Data Cup, organized in conjunction with the 8th International Conference on Semantic Systems [1].

The award came as recognition for work performed in cooperation between the Department of New Media Technology and the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management as part of DIVINE [2], a research project on the "Dynamic Integration and Visualization of Information from Multiple Evidence Sources" funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency. An interdisciplinary team consisting of Dr Marta Sabou, Adrian Brasoveanu and Dr Irem Arsal has exposed the content of TourMIS according to the principles of the novel Linked Data paradigm and argued about how this new technology can foster decision makers in the tourism domain [3, 4]. Since TourMIS is a key tourism statistics database developed and maintained at MODUL University Vienna [5], its transition to Linked Data technologies could have a significant impact on the tourism sector at large. As a follow up of this internal cooperation, which served the purposes of a proof of concept, the team is currently seeking additional funding for an extended implementation of their system.

Sponsored by Wolters Kluwer publishers, the Linked Data Cup certificate has been handed over to Mr. Brasoveanu (see photo above), who presented the work at the conference.
