MODUL University co-organizes 7th CPTHL Symposium in Thailand

MU lecturers and researchers Andreas Zins and Anja Hergesell recently participated in two conferences in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The 7th Biennial Symposium of Consumer Psychology of Tourism, Hospitality, and Leisure, of the International Academy of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research teamed up with the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Tourism Management of the School of Tourism Development at Maejo University. Taking place at the Furama Hotel from May 24-27th, 2011, the conferences focused on “Sustainability and Quality-of-Life in Tourism: Tasks for Consumers, Industry, Policy and Academia”.

As president of the International Academy of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research (IACTHR), Prof. Zins acted as co-chair of the conference and was responsible for the entire scientific program. Together with Prof. Laesser from University of St. Gallen, he also led the PhD workshop that took place prior to the conference, and invited PhD candidates to present their work and receive feedback from senior scholars in the field.

The conference featured 72 presentations on a number of topics grouped into 24 different sessions, with conference participants coming from 22 different countries. Prof. Zins presented his joined research with Jürgen Gnoth from University of Otago, New Zealand, on tourists’ cultural contact based on a study undertaken in Thailand. Anja Hergesell presented her first results on presumable spill-over effects between environmental attitudes and behavior in the daily routine-life, and “green” actual and intended behavior for leisure travel.

Keynote speeches were delivered by Prof. Muzzo Uysal from Virginia Tech, USA, on tourism and quality of life; Dr. Catheryn Khoo-Lattimore from Taylor’s University, Malaysia spoke on ZMET as a research method in tourism; and the CEO of Thai AirAsia, Mr. Tasspon Bijleveld discussed ''Sustaining Growth of the Leading Low-Cost Carrier in Asia''. The conference concluded with Prof. Zins handing over the responsibilities as president of the IACTHR to Prof. Metin Kozak from Mugla University, Turkey who will take over the job from the beginning of next year.
