Dr. Francesco Luigi Milone brings a timely and practical perspective to MU, helping students understand how digital platforms are reshaping business, work, travel, communication, and everyday life.
His interest in the platform economy began during his Master of Science thesis, where he studied Airbnb and its business model. What fascinated him most was the complexity behind platforms. Unlike traditional companies, platforms must create value for two or more connected groups of users at the same time. They need to balance incentives, manage network effects, and make decisions that can influence the entire ecosystem.
This curiosity continued during his PhD in Management Engineering, where he focused on the economics of Airbnb. A visiting research period brought him to Modul University Vienna, where he connected with Professor Ulrich Gunter and Professor Bozana Zekan, whose work on Airbnb and tourism economics had influenced the field. Their collaboration later contributed to the development of a course that gives students fresh insight into the platform economy.
For Milone, platforms such as Airbnb, Uber, Amazon, and TikTok are not only familiar apps. They are powerful business models that challenge traditional economic thinking. In many industries, companies used to create value by owning resources. Platforms create value differently: they connect producers and consumers, reduce friction, and make exchange easier at scale.
