Meet Professor Doug Stokes

Professor Doug Stokes is one of Europe's leading voices on geopolitics and global security. A former Director of Exeter's Strategy and Security Institute and long-serving Senior Research Fellow at the UK’s Royal United Services Institute, he has advised senior political and defence figures across Europe. His books are published by Oxford University Press and Johns Hopkins, and his commentary appears regularly in The Times, The Telegraph, and The Spectator. Before academia, he co-founded an NGO in post-war Bosnia—experience that grounds his teaching in real-world stakes. At MU, he's building an IR program that connects theory directly to practice.
“At Modul University, we’re not just teaching international relations—we’re preparing the people who will help define it.”
The new International Relations program focuses on geopolitics, diplomacy, conflict, and global governance. Skills that are increasingly vital in an era of rapid global change.
Stokes emphasizes three qualities he hopes every student will develop:
HUMILITY, SELF-DISCIPLINE, AND CRITICAL THINKING.
