Modul University Vienna Mourns the Passing of Professor Egon Smeral

Date: 06/August/2026

It is with profound sadness that Modul University Vienna announces the passing of Professor Egon Smeral, one of the world’s most distinguished tourism economists, an outstanding scholar, and a treasured colleague.

His passing is a great loss for our university and for the international tourism research community.
Professor Smeral was internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in tourism economics. He was a Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism, President of the Tourist Research Center, and a member of the International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism for many decades.
Throughout a distinguished career spanning more than five decades, Professor Smeral made pioneering contributions to the study of tourism demand, forecasting, competitiveness, business cycles, and the economic impact of tourism. His research helped shape modern tourism economics and remains among the most influential work in the field.

His publications have become essential references for researchers around the world. His work on income and price elasticities of tourism demand, the relationship between tourism and macroeconomic cycles, and the forecasting of international tourism flows significantly advanced the discipline. Many tourism economists have built upon the theoretical and empirical foundations he established.

He was also a highly sought-after advisor to tourism businesses, international organizations, and government bodies, where his expertise informed tourism policy, economic strategy, and long-term destination development.

Beyond his remarkable scientific achievements, Professor Smeral was deeply respected for his intellectual generosity, humility, and willingness to share his knowledge. He was a valued mentor, colleague, and collaborator who inspired generations of young researchers. His thoughtful advice, constructive criticism, and genuine encouragement helped shape numerous academic careers, including those of many colleagues at Modul University Vienna.

Those who had the privilege of working with Egon will remember not only his extraordinary analytical mind, kindness, integrity, and collegial spirit, but also his warm and distinctive sense of humor. He had a remarkable ability to bring lightness to conversations and shared moments, even while engaging with the most complex academic questions.

Professor Smeral combined scientific excellence with personal warmth. He earned the admiration, respect, and friendship of colleagues throughout Europe and far beyond.

The international tourism research community has lost one of its true pioneers. His scholarly legacy will endure through his publications, the many researchers he influenced, and the lasting impact of his ideas on tourism economics.

On behalf of the entire Modul University Vienna community, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives and work he touched.

Smeral, Egon

Professor Egon Smeral’s contributions will continue to inspire future generations. His legacy will remain an integral part of our university and our discipline. He will be greatly missed.
