Scholarship options for PhD candidates

Modul University Vienna’s PhD program seeks outstanding candidates for joining its research team as a PhD candidate. Modul University combines a strong academic foundation with state-of-the-art curricula and a commitment to innovation and sustainability. Successful candidates have a strong background in quantitative research methods and demonstrated research interests and skills in one of our research areas.Outstanding candidates may be granted a scholarship. Scholarships can not be transferred. Students do not have to apply separately for the PhD scholarships. Please proceed first with submitting your application for the PhD program, then you will have the chance to discuss with the admissions commitee potential scholarship schemes.

Outstanding candidates may be granted a Merit Scholarship by the Admissions Committee. Scholarships can not be transferred.

Essential qualifications to be eligible for a scholarship:

  • A completed Master or Diploma Degree (by September 2021) in a field of the social sciences, business, tourism and/or hospitality management, statistics, information systems, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent analytical skills and evidence of the potential to undertake cutting-edge research and scholarship.
  • Excellent written and spoken English (German is not a requirement as English is the working language). The minimum scores are: TOEFL: 100 Internet-based test (IBT) with no individual section score less than 20; or IELTS: overall band score between 7 and 7.5 with no sub-score below 6.0. The Admissions Committee may decide upon the recognition of other evidence of language skills.

Your scholarship application needs to include a statement of your research interest and a research proposal (5-10 pages). Check this list for your proposal:

  • The relevance of the intended research
  • The current state of knowledge about the topic and a characterization of usual conceptual approaches
  • The research question
  • The planned methodology and its feasibility and how the costs of data collection will be financed
  • Potential or expected outcomes, the benefit for industry and/or society, and foreseeable points of criticism and discussion
  • The proposal is not considered binding for the actual dissertation which will be written in case of a successful application.
  • The application must also include a written statement by a MU Vienna Professor willing to supervise the candidate.

 

Successful applications are characterized by meeting high standards regarding the following requirements:

  • conformance with the call and its spirit
  • connectedness to one of the research topics as listed
  • demonstrated potential to foster future-relevant research on a high scientific level
  • potential impact of the results on industry and society
  • availability of an appropriate supervisor
  • innovativeness
  • demonstrated scientific competence.

Thereby, Modul University will take all necessary care to ensure fairness and to avoid any kind of discrimination. However, there is no legal right whatsoever of receiving such a scholarship.

The decision about the scholarship application will be taken by a committee consisting of the President, the Dean, the prospective supervisors of the applicants and a representative of the admissions and service department.

External Scholarships

The collaboration between Modul University Vienna and third-party organizations (national/international organizations or corporate partners) provides ongoing, part-time employment opportunities to PhD candidates during the course of their studies. PhD candidates are granted a tuition waiver while simultaneously working for the sponsoring partner.

Reductions on tuition fees

Mathias Corvinus Collegium Foundation Scholarship 

Amount: 25 scholarships that either fully or partially cover tuition fees for the entire duration of the chosen program

Eligibility: Students applying for the Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 semesters who meet the following criteria:

  • Are nationals of one of the following countries: Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan (only for Spring 2025) or Azerbaijan (only for Spring 2025), AND
  • Have achieved at least 80% cumulative performance (GPA) throughout classes in the last 4 completed semesters, OR are actively involved in social, cultural, or volunteering activities, with evidence of at least 2 such endeavors, OR have participated in competitions, accelerators, or activities requiring extra time and dedication

The deadline for the MCC Scholarship for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 is June 1, 2024!


­Next Generation Grant

Amount: 50 or 75%

Eligibility: Based on the quality of the research proposal


Full Tuition Fee Payment

Amount: 3% of total tuition
Eligibility: Applicants who opt to pay their full tuition fees in one.­


One Academic Year Tuition Payment Reduction

Amount: 1.5% of the tuition for 1 year
Eligibility: Applicants who opt to pay ahead the tuition fee for one academic year.


Siblings Reduction

Amount: 10% of the total tuition fees for following siblings
Eligibility: If you are a sibling of a current student at MU Vienna and also want to study at MU. This reduction is not related to a specific study program. 


Exchange Alumni Grant

Amount: 8% of total tuition
Eligibility: If you have visited MU Vienna as an Exchange Student and decide to continue your study at MU. 


Merit Grant

Amount: 10% of total tuition
Eligibility: The admissions committee may grant a reduction of 10% to outstanding candidates. This grant is up to the discretion of the admissions committee and no extra application is required.


 

Be aware

Applicants from non-EU countries applying for a "Residency Permit Student" in Austria should keep in mind that the immigration authorities require all applicants to present proof of having sufficient financial means to cover their cost of living for the first year (min. EUR 11,000). The overall amount that must be presented in advance at the time of applying!
