Davis Gibbs is a lecturer and academic assistant in the Department of Sustainability, Governance, and Methods at Modul University Vienna. As an American living in Europe, he has multiple cultural perspectives and insights into the core issues associated to weak socioeconomic conditions. With work experience in hospitality, service and educational administration, Davis is currently tackling the root causes of urban and regional blight or decay via research that evaluates the effectiveness of revitalization strategies implemented by the associative governance network. With a MSc in sustainable development, management and policy, his research focuses on the three pillars of sustainable development (social, economic & environmental) and how policies affect these pillars in localized areas. As internal development is needed to usher these study sites to a brighter and more sustainable future, stimulating an economic system is just part of the solution and not the holistic approach. Davis argues the pathway of social improvements benefiting the economic system as a whole, leading to environmentally sound and appropriate behavior on the individual and collective levels. Basic needs have to be provided to all in order to ensure a sustainable future, a commonality with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Revitalization polices must be guided, appropriate and effective, using successful benchmark research and socioeconomic performance indicators as tools to evaluate these components.
