Cost Of Living Overview
In Vienna, most international students budget about €1,000 – €1,500/month for rent, food, transport, insurance, and personal expenses — though your individual budget can be higher or lower depending on your lifestyle and accommodation choices.
Accommodation
- Student dormitories / shared flat: ~ €400 – €900/month (varies by type & location).
Food & Groceries
- Groceries and eating out typically cost €250 – €380/month, depending on how often you cook versus eat out.
Transport
- Vienna has excellent public transport; student passes or semester tickets make costs manageable (roughly under €60–€80/month with discounts).
Health Insurance & Other Essentials
- Health insurance: around €60 – €80/month (mandatory for international students).
- Utilities (internet/phone) and personal expenses add on depending on your usage.
Tips for Students
- Shared flats or student housing are typically the most cost-effective options.
- Take advantage of student discounts on transport, culture, and food.

Our university provides the opportunity to start your studies 2 times per year. If you are thinking to take a gap after finishing your studies or are completing your degree later, you will not have to wait for the traditional fall intake! MU offer the following enrollment opportunities:
Fall Intake – Studies beginning in the middle of September
Spring Intake – Studies beginning in the middle of February
We operate on a rolling basis for our application process, with applications for each intake opening one year prior to the start of the desired intake.
You can begin your application for your desired intake in the online portal and make sure to check the deadlines for the intake here (Hyperlink to the portal).
Like most Austrian universities, Modul University Vienna does not have its own student residence, instead we have a contract with some local private student accommodation providers. Our choice of partners includes very diverse offers and price ranges to fit different lifestyle needs.
Students can apply directly through MU for one of our dorm partners, WIHAST. If you are interested in this option, our Student Services Coordinators will share with you an application form after you are enrolled. The deadline for applying to WIHAST through MU’s internal application is 15 December for the Spring Intake and 15 July for the Fall Intake.
For all other partners, students need to apply individually through the provider’s website.

Yes, we do! The buddy program is designed to help support new students and soften the start of the semester by having a student ‘mentor’.
